Soapstone countertops offer a distinctive combination of natural beauty, exceptional heat resistance, and understated elegance. Known for their smooth, soft feel and rich, earthy colors, soapstone surfaces bring warmth and character to kitchens, bathrooms, and other living spaces.
Unlike many natural stones, soapstone is naturally nonporous and develops a beautiful patina over time, making every installation uniquely its own.

What Is Soapstone?

Soapstone is a natural metamorphic rock composed primarily of talc, along with varying amounts of other minerals. Its smooth, almost silky texture gives soapstone its name.
Typically found in shades of gray, charcoal, and green, soapstone often features subtle white veining and natural variations.
Soapstone is naturally nonporous, making it highly resistant to staining and moisture without requiring a protective sealer.
Â
Key Characteristics of Soapstone

• Composition: Natural metamorphic stone containing talc and other minerals.
• Hardness: Generally ranges from approximately 1 to 5.5 on the Mohs scale, depending on its mineral composition. Countertop-grade soapstone is typically harder than softer artistic varieties.
• Porosity: Naturally nonporous and resistant to moisture and staining.
• Appearance: Rich gray, charcoal, and green tones with subtle natural veining.
• Heat Resistance: Exceptionally resistant to heat, making it well suited for kitchen applications.
• Maintenance: Requires no sealing, although optional mineral oil treatments can enhance its color.
Â
Why Choose Soapstone Countertops?

• Natural Beauty: Distinctive colors and subtle veining create a warm, timeless appearance.
• Exceptional Heat Resistance: Soapstone tolerates high temperatures without the heat sensitivity associated with engineered quartz.
• Stain Resistant: Its naturally nonporous composition helps prevent liquids from penetrating the surface.
• Low Maintenance: No sealing is required to protect against moisture.
• Unique Patina: Soapstone naturally develops character and a richer appearance as it ages.
• Repairable Surface: Minor scratches can often be reduced through careful sanding or mineral oil treatment.

Soapstone Colors & Finishes

Soapstone is known for its understated, earthy appearance rather than dramatic patterns.
Common colors include light gray, medium gray, charcoal, deep green, and nearly black tones. Many varieties feature delicate white or light-colored veining.
Soapstone typically has a smooth, matte or honed finish that highlights its natural character.
Over time, the stone may gradually darken through use. Applying mineral oil or a soapstone-specific wax can create a darker, more uniform appearance.
Because soapstone is natural, every slab has its own unique color variations and veining.

Soapstone Care & Maintenance

Soapstone is one of the easiest natural stones to maintain because it does not require sealing.
• Daily Cleaning: Clean with warm water, mild dish soap, or a compatible stone cleaner such as Stone Butler Daily Cleaner, following product directions.
• Spill Prevention: Wipe up spills promptly to keep the surface clean, although soapstone naturally resists staining.
• Scratch Care: Soapstone is softer than granite or quartzite and may develop scratches through everyday use. Cutting boards are recommended.
• Optional Color Enhancement: Mineral oil or a soapstone-specific wax can deepen the stone's color and help create a more uniform appearance.
• Long-Term Care: Avoid abrasive cleaning tools and unnecessary harsh chemicals.
Important: Soapstone does not require sealing. Products such as All-In-One Weekly Cleaner & Sealer and Final Touch Professional Sealer are generally unnecessary for soapstone and should only be used if specifically approved for the material.
With simple maintenance, soapstone countertops can provide decades of natural beauty and functionality.
